Prince’s stylist Kim Berry talks about life behind the “Purple curtain” (Interview at The Current)

[Andrea Swensson] So you worked with Prince
as his personal hair stylist for 28 years and I want to know what do you think it was
about your relationship that allowed it to endure for so long. [Kim Berry] I put everything back on God.
I really do. I tell everybody that it was the God in me that saw the God in him. And
he needed to have someone real around him. There were enough “yes” men and things like
that and that wasn’t what I was there for. He saw me as like the girl next door, the
home girl, his momma sometimes, ’cause I was always bossing him around. I took care of
him and made sure he got from A to Z. I think he needed that around him. ‘Cause that was
missing. [AS] So you could maybe talk back every now
and then? [KB] Every now and then. Every now and then.
Yeah. [AS] So obviously Prince’s hair changed a
lot and I’m wondering do you have a favorite hairstyle or couple of favorite hairstyles
that come to mind? [KB] Well, the one most notable, of course,
the Super Bowl hairdo. We had just finished his hair. His hair was gorgeous, that’s when
he kept it cut short and we had put these beautiful big curls in the top. All day we
had been outside taking pictures, doing all kinds of stuff and then right before — it
started to pour down raining — before it was time for him to come out, he’s like, “They’re
not gonna make me go outside, are they?” I was like “Absolutely. This is live, bro!”
He was like “Oh no.” He said “OK, give me a scarf” and I’d be like “No scarves!” I kept
trying to hide everything he was trying to find! He was like “What about my hats?” I
was like “The hats are in the car!” So I went to go run for the hat, but by this time they
had put him on a golf cart and took him over to the stage. Oh, he comes up out of the stage
through the elevator and he has a do-rag on and I’m like “[GASPS] where did he get that
from? No!”So that was just crazy, but he had the do-rag on and everybody was like “How
did he do that performance? Was there an umbrella over the stage?” and I was like, “No.” I said
that man’s magic. He’s the only man that we know that can dance under water and not get
wet. He performed that whole Super Bowl performance. It was magic, and at the end he just took
the do-rag and ripped it off and threw it into the audience, and I was like “That’s
show business, baby! [CLAPS] That’s show buisiness!” So when he came off he asked “How’d I do?
How’d I do?” And I said “Oh, you know you was the business.” I was like, “C’mon man!”
You know, he always wanted to know. “How was that? How was that?” But it was all beautiful.
That was just a great moment in time for me. The other was the 1999 concert we did at Paisley
Park and we had grew it out long, it was beautiful, it had the auburn highlights in the top and
he was like, the next day, “yeah, I think I’m over it.” I was like, “What do you mean
you’re over it?” He was like “Cut my hair off.” “WHAT?” We argued for a good 5, 10 minutes,
and I was like “No, you can’t cut this hair off!” He was like, Kim, cut it off or I’m
going to cut it for you.” I was like “Oh no!” So as sad as I was, I went over and took scissors
to it and chopped all those beautiful locks off, but, he said he only liked it because
it looked good playing his guitar. You know while he made his guitar sing, he could make
his hair flow. And the day after that, he was over it, he was like OK, on to the next.
So we were on to the next hairstyle. That’s what that was. [AS] New millenium, new look. [KB] Yes, yes. Absolutely. He was ready for
change, yep. [AS] What did you think about the afro coming
back? [KB] The baby afro I loved. The big afro,
not so much. The baby afro I loved. He was dating a young lady, Andy Allo, and she was
all-natural and so he was like, “I think I’m wanna go natural” and I was like “Boo.” But
I knew it was something because he was tender-headed and he didn’t really like to get his hair
done every day like we always did, so that was convenient for him. He was like “I can
handle this by myself.” and I was like “Boo. Boooo.” But we still had to keep it colored
and conditioned and all that other great stuff. Yeah, it worked out beautiful. [AS] So you have some special intel, I’m hoping,
that you can share with us — [KB] Uh oh [AS] About how Prince started wearing light-up
sneakers. [KB] Oh… Yep, nope. Y’all going to have
to wait on the book for that. [Laughs] Yep, that is a story but it’s in the book. I’m
sorry guys. So I have a new book coming out, “Diamonds and Curls: 29 years Behind the Purple
Curtain, Rolling with Rock Royalty”. I’m excited about that and in that book will be love,
life and all the stories of he and I traveling together. Some moments where there was no
one but he and I so no one would know this story but me. You know what I mean? But I’m
excited to talk about the man, the brother, the husband, the dad. You know. I’m not going
to talk about the rock star, ’cause most fans can tell me about the rock star. I tell everyone
I was never a Prince fan, so that was never my issue. And I believe that was another reason
why I was able to stay around him so long was because I wasn’t a fan. People are like
“oh my god, I couldn’t have touched his hair…” Well I didn’t have that problem, I had a job
to do. So I increased my longevity that way with him, you know. And he knew that, and
so we did what needed to be done and made it work for him. And so that’s what the book
will be about. The loving stories, the funny stories, the stories of philanthropy, what
people never knew that he gave and he gave ’cause he had such a big heart. He was just
a super human when it came to making sure our communities were well taken care of, that
children were taken music classes, computer coding and all that, that was major for him.
He would always find organizations that he could pour into and that he could help. So
it was just a beautiful thing I’m excited about telling the world about that part of
Prince. Not the Prince that you saw on stage. Everybody knows about that Prince. I want
to talk about behind the curtain Prince. [AS] I love that. When can we expect that? [KB] It’ll be soon. I’m hoping the first of
the year, but if not, they can go to my website kimbonset.com – k i m the letter b on s e
t dot com — and they can find the information there. We have a newsletter, we’ll be sending
out newsletters on everything Kim Berry, which will be the hair product line, the hair extension
line as well as the book that’s coming out. And you know, any other tours and stuff that
I’m going on. Like now, I’m currently on tour with Katt Williams. So that will be included.
Any information on that. So just all things Kim Berry, so that’s what the website is about. [AS] The Kim Berry universe. [KB] Absolutely. Absolutely. [AS] It’s always so nice to talk to you. [KB] Oh bless you. Thank you, it’s a pleasure
to be here. Thank you for coming. [KB] Thank you for having me. I truly appreciate
it. Thank you.

she is sweet….When on tour in london In the 90's I would black out the hair salon windows in the hotel so Kim and prince could get made up, she would shave slave on his face.

I love her so much! She was such strength for Prince! She was one of the closest people to him.

I'm so glad you are talking nice about him. it's about time somebodys talking about him nice. I just feel like prince was a good person, I'm sure he wasn't perfect but I just feel like he had a good spirit.

"Colored and conditioned".. don't need to know that, quite frankly
Aren't there secrets only your hairdresser knows?
This and other stuff.. smh

Prince use to sing "She's always in my hair " . …Kim helped make Prince become one of " The Beautiful Ones " She made him ". Beautiful Strange. "

Great Interview! Thank you, for sharing this and allowing us to see one of the faces behind Prince! ❤️😀💯🙏⭐️🎨

Prince and friends are a bunch of Satan worshipers. Dressed in black, with a silver pentagram around it's neck. Gross…. I think it ate Prince, fentanyl, little shoes and all!

I will be definitely be buying her book. She's the real deal.. Going natural?! BOOOOO!.. LOL🤣
Prince 4ever! 💜

His hair was always on point. She could do some mean finger waves. Thanks Kim for keeping Prince looking great all those years.

That beautiful, sexy hair from the Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic concert ringing in the year 2000….the next day it got cut off! He was a Beautiful Man & his hair was spectacular short or long. His heart was the Best part of him ❤

Not Surprisin that Some Black women would be against the Big Natural! But they love those WEAVES tho!

Just another person cashing in on Prince passing…

I think she’s full of it!!! Probably combed his hair once in the 90s cause his stylist was sick 🙄.

Are we donating all the proceeds from the book to one of Princes charities??? I bet not!

Kim!!!! How can I get an appointment to get my hair done???? I love all the work you did with prince's hair!!!

When he was alive she didn't talk about him.
Would he approve of her doing this…..no book. Let his legacy stay and protect his privacy…..you should have stayed quiet! !!!!
Talk to your family your friends or just shtum! !!!!
Talk about trying to make money.
Is she giving the proceeds from the book to a much needed cause or in her pocket.
My biggest angst is that a book is being written about his private life….it happens but it soooooooooooo wrong on every level.
"Keep a low profile. Not everyone needs to know everything about you!'

George Michael's true fans would not want salacious details nor his private life written about because no one needs to. He was honest and open about his indiscretions and all his human flaws which we all have and that is why after 15 months since his unexpected passing he is hugely and genuinely loved more than ever.
I pray the book doesn't sell. If Prince wanted a book written about him self and private world he would have done it himself…..SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Yeah THIS IS promoting her hair and product line cause there were other hair stylist THAT contradict those other 29 years that she's claiming🤔

GO KIM BERRY!!!! I never thought about Prince having a hair stylist (HE woke up like this or this, or that….) ONE of the many things I loved was his beautiful, well groomed hair plus his diversity. Great interview.

One thing I CANNOT STAND…..is a comment section filled with RABID Prince FANS. And I purposely say FANS because Prince didn't like to use that word, but many of you are FANATICAL. No matter when Kim STOPPED working for Prince,….she DID work with him for OVER 20 YEARS. Did YOU!!? I don't wanna hear about your anonymous "source"…..or you knew a baby's Mamma's cousin…DID YOU, personally!!? The way some of you try to act like you're the expert over a human you were NEVER PERSONAL FRIENDS WITH……just sickens me. Kim ain't messy. And even if there IS some mess that went on (Meshell Ndegeocello said he wasn't nice, at times)…..we all know Prince could be very nasty…..like his Dad.

Prince, Donald Trump, Kanye West, Tupac Shakur, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes—-are/were all hell-raisers with huge egos and true Gemini personalities. Prince didn't dedicate albums to YOU….he did to Mayte and she conceived his child (Baby Gregory, R.I.P.). KIM BERRY is a round-the-way sista who styled his precious hair and got all in his business for 20 YEARS. Prince was a human being. Get over it.

I bet prince did not pay her as well as some people might think. His last stylist quit working for him because she said she was tired of kissing his ass. Prince didn't even want Kim to look him.in the eyes when she first started working for him. Now Kim.is writing a book just like everyone else. , cashing in on him. She's going to milk this for all its worth.

Terrific person. She deserves good things coming her way…..everyone needs money and Prince would be OK with it……maybe.

I wonder if Andy Allo knows that Kim is publicly outing their relationship. This is the second or third time she’s mentioned it. She and Prince always kept hush hush about their relationship and Andy is respectful of keeping that private and only talks about their working/collaborative relationship when asked about P.

Well.it's nice that someone would keep someone around for such a long period of time in their employ….may probably offered their services…some for free to just say they worked with him…

She´s the real deal. Lovley woman so genuine and beautiful. Im sure she was an emotional rock to lean on for Prince.

*Love U Gurl!!😚For Being Urself And So Real😘I had Nothing But Tears And Smiles Just Listening To You🙇🏻‍♀️Godbless Mama🙏🏼

Ms. Berry, i am definitely getting your book! Thanks for being a good friend to Mr. Nelson– EVERYBODY needs a good friend.

Everyone needs a real person like you who signed a CDA!! ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU ARE SELLING HIS SIGNATURE COPIED ON A MACHINE FOR $10.00 A POP!! NOW YOU KNOW HOW PRIVATE HE WAS.
I KNEW IT. HE WAS MY BROTHER, AND FRIEND SINCE 1978. MY EX WAS A MUSIC EXECUTIVE. WILLIAM "PABLO" DAVIS. HE MANAGED MIDNIGHT STAR, THE DEELE WITH BABYFACE, AND L. A. REID. I KNEW HIM AS A FRIEND. ALLEGED STORIES FROM FORMER EMPLOYEES WHO CONTINUE TO EXPLOIT HIS LEGACY. IT IS SICKENING.

Do u people really believe this type of women is good for him?😫he had a momma why have this bullying overbearing women around. If he as a Gemini was looking for his Wendy it ain't her!!!!!!I don't like this type around him!!!😠😫👎😡

People listen up if she was such a good friend and cared for Prince then why is he dead. if she really cared then why didnt she get him to a rehab,if she was this close then why did he die in the elevator by himself & where was she when he died the media will say anything for a buck or two and now Secrets want to be revealed in her book that's betrayal to me. even dope boys when they go to jail some keep Secrets until the day they die. so where was she?

Kim Berry is a piece of shit!! And selling his hair for money wow. Why don’t you tell people how he expressed to you he suspected his chefs of poising him before his death! Fame hungry fat mess

Amazing a person working with Prince and she's not even a Prince fan wow omg lol How could someone not be a Prince fan and also being so close to him! Wow

4get knowing how 2 play. Prince let a hairstylist with bad comb and flat iron longer than ANYONE else. Let that sink in.

IN HIS HIGH SCHOOL PHOTOS
WITH THE BASKET BALL, HIS
FRO WAS BEAUTIFUL.
I KNOW WHEN IT WAS FLAT IRONED OR STRAIGHTEN OUT
IT LOOKED BEAUTIFUL.
IT GOT BURNED OUT BY PERMS.
THAT 'S TOO BAD. IT WAS STRAIGHT WHEN HE WAS IN SPAIN IN THAT INTERVIEW
AND HE KEPT TRYING TO SMOOTH IT DOWN, UNCOMFORTABLE LOOKING.
WHERE WERE YOU KIM?
